Diesel Confirmed as Carcinogenic by World Health Organization

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organization, published this press release on Tuesday confirming the carcinogenic nature of diesel .

In re-classifying diesel exhaust fumes as “carcinogenic to humans (group 1)” from its previous classification as “probably carcinogenic to human (group 2)”, the IARC has made a very strong statement concerning the need for public health action on this issue.

Having been recommended for re-classification by an a WHO Advisory Panel in 1998, the expert  working group convened last week to critically review and evaluate the evidence that diesel is indeed a cancer causing agent.  Concluding the findings of the study, Chairman of the Working Group , Dr. Christopher Portier, noted “The scientific evidence was compelling and the Working Group’s conclusion was unanimous: diesel engine exhaust causes lung cancer in humans(…) given the additional health impacts from diesel particulates, exposure to this mixture of chemicals should be reduced worldwide”
